Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach

1685–1750

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music. Born into a musical family, Bach was raised in Eisenach and spent his career in various German cities, most notably Leipzig, where he served as Thomaskantor for the last 27 years of his life.

Bach's output includes over 1,000 works spanning virtually every musical genre except opera. His sacred choral works — the Mass in B minor, the St Matthew Passion, the St John Passion, and the Magnificat — stand as cornerstones of the choral repertoire.
