Franz Joseph Haydn
Nelson Mass
Hob. XXII:11
The Nelson Mass (Hob. XXII:11) was composed in 1798 at a time of political upheaval, giving it an urgency and intensity unusual for Haydn. Named after Admiral Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile, it is scored for the unusual combination of strings, trumpets, timpani, and organ, giving it a martial, ceremonial character.
